Designing With Silicone Materials Series - Getting Started: Basic Design Concepts and Methods
Designing a device from a technical standpoint is unquestionably complex and
fraught with pitfalls. Planning the development of a device requires that a
design engineer consider what is needed and when. Time contingencies are always
a factor, as today's designs are expected to undergo several iterations before
a final version makes its way to the production line. Beginning with the end in
mind doesn't always cover unanticipated challenges and problems in the design
process. While we do not purport to be design experts, we do have a wealth of
materials and business knowledge that covers many challenges faced by materials
in the design phase.
Uncured Material Properties: Extrusion Rate and Flow
In past issues of Industry InSight, we've described several ways to
characterize a silicone material's uncured feel through viscosity and rheometry
measurements. As previously stated, a silicone's viscosity can have a large
impact on processes and, as such, it is an important property to measure.
NuSil Technology Institute Road Show
Due to the overwhelming success of our NuSil Technology Silicone Institutes,
we are launching the NTSI
Road Show to create an environment where customers can learn about the latest trends
and attend breakout sessions with our applications specialists.
Our first class will be held Sept. 21, 2005, in Worcester, MA. This one-day
seminar will focus on silicone fastening and adhesion technologies. For more
information on the program to register, click here.
Silicone Terms and Definitions
When increasing one's knowledge of silicone and its wide variety of applications, it's useful to understand
the numerous terms and their respective definitions. This white paper addresses the different types of materials,
their characteristics and preparation techniques.

New Products and Developments
Bakersfield Facility Now FDA-Registered Manufacturing Site
NuSil recently announced that its Bakersfield, California, facility is registered as a manufacturing site with
the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). NuSil's 2004 acquisition of the ingestible Simethicone products from GE Advanced
Materials Division prompted the Bakersfield site's registration. Since the acquisition, NuSil has expanded its Bakersfield
operations to accommodate the new product line.
