Designing With Silicone Materials Series
Industry InSight is continuing to push the envelope by launching a new series of articles devoted to the
design engineer: the Designing With Silicone Materials series. This series focuses on product design
with silicone materials and provides valuable knowledge for even the most experienced design engineer. For
more details about what this series will address, click here.
A Brief History of Siloxane Chemistry
Silicone compounds and materials comprise more than $10 billion annually in
global sales and impact industries ranging from construction and cosmetics, to
the healthcare and aerospace industries. While these versatile compounds have a
long and intricate past, this quick synopsis of significant developments
throughout silicone history provides insight into where and how these materials
got their start.
Quality Control and Testing Methods: Work Time (Pot Life)
Some silicone systems are formulated with the intent to cure into a specific
form. These silicones utilize reactive chemistries and contain crosslinkers and
catalysts. In a previous issue of Industry InSight, we discussed the
concept of viscosity to explain a material's feel; in this edition, we discuss
the case of curing silicone systems and how viscosity can change rapidly when
adding catalysts or exposing the system to a certain set of environmental
conditions.
Drug Delivery Market Summary
Silicones have been cited as materials regularly used in drug-delivery devices. Our new white paper discusses the three
main types of silicone devices - implanted, mucosal and transdermal — used in this market and how they work. In addition,
the white paper addresses the types of materials used in these applications, drug or active agents that are candidates
for these devices, and the use of rate-enhancing additives for optimum effectiveness.

New Products and Developments
NuSil Technology Introduces Line of Specialty Chemistry Materials, Fast-Curing Inks
NuSil recently introduced of a family of specialty chemistry materials — including functional polymers, cyclics,
catalysts, crosslinkers, as well as some silanes - ideal for use in a variety of applications. With this new offering,
these raw materials are now available to other customers in small and large volume. In addition, NuSil will customize these
specialty silicone chemistries based on specific applications, if needed.
NuSil also announced the addition of MED-6613-2, a fast-curing black ink for the healthcare industry, to its line of
silicone inks. This ink can be cured in less than one hour and is available in 50-gram kits, two-pint kits and two-gallon kits.
NuSil Technology Institute Road Show
Due to the overwhelming success of our NuSil Technology Silicone Institutes, we
are launching the NTSI
Road Show to create an environment where customers can learn about the latest trends and
attend breakout sessions with our applications specialists.
Our first class will be held Sept. 21, 2005 in Worcester, MA. This one-day
seminar will focus on silicone fastening and adhesion technologies. For more
information on the program and to register, click here.
